The conference "Prospects for the development of biomedical and genetic research in Kazakhstan" was held at Nazarbayev University School of Medicine

On March 13, 2023, a scientific conference, "Prospects for the development of biomedical and genetic research in Kazakhstan", was held in Astana and organized by Nazarbayev University Medicine in cooperation with the Institute of Genetics and Physiology under the aegis of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The conference was dedicated to recent developments in biomedical and genetic research in Kazakhstan; the participants discussed current trends and exchanged ideas and experiences with experts. Discussion breakout sessions were also held between Nazarbayev University researchers and participants on broad case studies such as:
  • Genetic research in biomedicine
  • Public Health
  • Development of vaccines and drug compounds
  • Clinical trials & Precision medicine
  • Innovation and commercialisation

Kuanysh Yergaliyev, Vice Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, says: “The Ministry of Science and Higher Education is interested in our institutes and universities working closely with Nazarbayev University, using the scientific resources that are available here, both human potential and infrastructure since the laboratories and the simulation centre of the School of Medicine are equipped according to modern requirements.”

The participants visited the School of Medicine research and educational infrastructure, including the 3D-digital anatomy laboratory, biomedical research facilities and the Simulation Center, where students, doctors, nurses, and other specialists study and improve clinical skills on high-fidelity manikins and simulators under the guidance of professors and specially trained instructors. Participants also had the opportunity to visit the biomedical research infrastructure on the main university campus, including the core facilities (C4) and the National Laboratory Astana.

Vice President for Medicine - Dean of the Nazarbayev University School of Medicine, Dr Massimo Pignatelli, emphasized that the primary mission of Nazarbayev University School of Medicine is to train highly qualified healthcare professionals in accordance with international standards and share their experience with other medical and educational institutions in Kazakhstan.

Moreover, Nazarbayev University developed a “Collaborative Research Program” to foster partnership and research collaborations between Nazarbayev University and different research centres and universities in Kazakhstan. This collaborative approach will contribute to increasing the competitiveness of the domestic healthcare system and allow to modernize of the training system of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals, including basic biomedical, clinical and public health researchers in Kazakhstan.
